Innovative Teaching and Learning Research

Launched in 2009, ITL Research is a multiyear global research program designed to investigate the factors that promote the transformation of teaching practices and the impact those changes have on students’ learning outcomes across a broad range of country contexts.  As part of Microsoft’s commitment to education transformation, its Partners in Learning Program initiated the Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) Research project to contribute information and policy insights on where and how effective education transformation is taking place around the world.

Maria Langworthy is the International Project Director for ITL Research on behalf of Microsoft’s Partners in Learning. Maria developed the original concept for ITL Research, and currently manages SRI International’s work on the project as well as coordinating the partnerships with education system leaders from each of the participating countries. She also frequently presents the research findings at conferences and meetings.

Partners in Learning Schools Program Evaluation Research

Schools around the world are striving to improve students’ learning experiences through effective use of technology. Students need a strong set of competencies for life and work in the 21st Century that traditional education does not often provide. Microsoft‘s Partners in Learning Schools Program delivers models that any school or system can use to make progress on the path to transforming education to meet students’ new needs. The evaluation research for this program was based on annual surveys of school leaders and educators in over 40 schools around the world that are part of the Schools Program. The evaluation focuses on educators’ use of innovative teaching practices, and measuring changes in those practices each year. The objective of the project was to provide a basis for discussion and reflection in the broader school community and to inform school planning and professional development.
